While we’d all like to believe that our world is private; we’re probably watched a lot more than we know. A virtual private network (VPN) is a private network often used by companies or organizations, to communicate confidentially while the rest of the world remains blissfully unaware.
VPN traffic can be carried over a public networking infrastructure (Internet) or over a service provider's private network with a defined Service Level Agreement between the VPN customer and the VPN service provider. Cisco is a leader in client VPN technology. While setting up a VPN may seem cumbersome especially if yours is a small business, I’d counter that VPN is the only way to protect what little you’ve got. How to set up a VPN is readily available online and can be complemented in any number of different ways. If you’ve got a Mac, you may run into problems with your VPN setup. There is free client software to fix unforeseen issues, whether they be with a Mac, XP, or even your ISP such as linksys. Mac and Cisco have known to butt heads and slow up your process so if you feel like you’ve got conflicting software and hardware, it’s important to take a step back before making any hasty decisions. But the bottom line may be you may need to junk one or the other. VPN connection and VPN technology implementation go hand in hand so you should first be confident in your network before pursuing any further. If you’re unable to connect with a VPN and you get the message “di524” you should consult your owners manual or other outside online resource before pursuing any further avenues. Your wireless mobility is one of those things which will remain important to you after you’ve set up your VPN so don’t forget to treat yourself well and take care of all ancillary issues with your network before you try to fix any VPN surface errors. While the whole episode may seem silly to some, there is great private data being transported all the time that requires the encryption and safety of a VPN. And while you may not think much of the information you push around on your desktop from 9-5, your company certainly does if they’ve installed a VPN. So whether it’s limited access to the internet, the encryption and sealing of peoples personal information, credit cards, medical information, or court proceedings, so much of what we know is held on a network somewhere; that somewhere should be protected. |
